On This Date - Emily Cashman
On October 5, 1954 Hurricane Hazel was formed. It was a category 4 hurricane that struck the Eastern United States. It was the deadliest hurricane of that season. Before reaching america, this hurricane traveled through Haiti and caused about 1000 fatalities. Then it swept from North Carolina to New York and killed 95 people. While passing through Canada, it took the lives of 81 more people. This took the total death toll to around 1200. The hurricane caused the most damage in Toronto because they were unprepared and didn't know how to handle that type of catastrophe. The total damage it caused was over $400 million. This was a very important event in our history because it destroyed many homes and families, and it also affected three countries. Specifically, the families of the 95 people killed in the US will never forget the effects of this tragedy. Hurricane Hazel was an important date in history.
