The date I chose was October 4th. The event I choose that happened this day was in 1864 and this was when the New Orleans Tribune started. This is an important event because it was the first Black Daily newspaper.
The New Orleans Tribune was started by Dr. Louis Charles Roundanez and was originally printed in both French and English due to the huge French influence in New Orleans. I believe this event was a good thing because it was used as a way to bridge the gap between African-Americans and the majority of the population. The start of this newspaper influenced other groups of people to start newspapers similar to the New Orleans Tribune. The New Orleans Tribune and other newspapers like it showed that blacks aren't really any different than white and gave an insight to their culture and how they're treated. I'm glad that this newspaper was started and I'm glad that it still exists 150 years later while honoring the legacy of the man that started it.
Also, I chose this day because it's my baby cousin's birthday and I thought it was fitting to choose this event because she lives in New Orleans.
