On October 10, 1982, Pope John Paul canonized
Rev Maximilian Kolbe, who volunteered to die in place of another inmate at Auschwitz concentration camp, a saint. This was an incredible act of selflessness and courage on Kolbe's behalf, and as someone of the Catholic faith, this recongnition is the greatest of honors. He was declared a "martyr of charity" as he gave his life to save someone else's, someone he did not even know. He now is the patron saint of drug addicts, journalists, families and prisoners. While this may not have been an even that everyone knows or cares about, this is a story I believe people should know about. A man who is willing to give the ultimate sacrifice in order to save another man's life, is a man who should be recongized and is someone with a heart that we should all strive for.
It may not have shaken the world or changed an entire globe, but for someone it changed everything. I think the story of Kolbe should be known.
