For the love and hate of television - Ben Grossman

Personally i don't watch a lot of of television. When i do its just the news or a football game with my family. I still think its a good source of entertainment. When you're watching television you can just sit back and relax and you don't have to do anything. Television can also bring people together. If you look shows like the walking dead and game of thrones get millions of views. These people are brought together by their love of the show.

I do think the amount of ads on television is crazy. For every 10 minutes of a show you get 5 minutes of ads. Though most of the ads are annoying, some can be hilarious like the ads during the super bowl. But those companies pay huge amounts of money for about 30 seconds of time so they have to make the ad memorable.

I can't really say television is a good use of time because you could always be doing something better like curing cancer or fighting poverty. But it's your life so you should be able to spend it how you want.

Flying Turkeys - Isabel Jenkins

Unlike most Americans, I don't have a ton of direct relatives - my family consists of a grand total of two grandparents, four aunts and uncles, and a single blood cousin. We alternate years between having Thanksgiving with my mom's side of the family in Kentucky, and my dad's side of the family in Arkansas. This year it was my mom's side of the family, which consists merely of my Nana coming over from Elizabethtown. My mom has two stepbrothers, but they live farther away so we don't see them much.

When we have Thanksgiving here in Lexington, it is very relaxed - two years ago the five of us plus my Nana just went to Golden Corral for our Thanksgiving meal. This year my mom actually cooked, and I was put in charge of the stuffing (she said I cut the onions too big, of course). We ate together, and then my Nana and I tried to comprehend football. That's about it.

Thanksgiving in Arkansas is quite a contrast. It will be much different when, next year, my brothers and I pile into the backseat for the 12 hour drive to Arkansas. My dad has a brother and a sister, and our families all meet at my dad's dad's little one-story house. We are the biggest of the family units, with 3 kids - my dad's sister has a daughter a bit older than me, and his brother has an adopted girl. It is a tradition for us all to hold candles and go around the table saying what we are thankful for, using our candle to then light the person next to us. It can be hectic, unlike the somewhat understated Thanksgiving at our house, but I enjoy both. It is nice balance to have each every other year.

Flying Turkeys- Zachary Whitehouse

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. Mostly, because I love all the great holiday food like turkey, mashed potatoes, corn, gravy, pumpkin pie, pecan pie, deviled eggs, cranberries, ham and more. But, I also love Thanksgiving because I get to meet with all the family on kybdads side and catch up on everything we've missed through out the year. We always have a Thanksgiving party with everyone on my dads side and and a separate thanksgiving with my mom's parents. More food for me and more family! I don't see what there is to not like about Thanksgiving unless you don't like to eat this kind of food or don't care for your family. I also love to watch football on Thanksgiving before and after I eat to relax and windddown and digest the food. This year my favorite football team won so that caused forrejoice! I like to go Black Friday shopping with my mom yo get presents for my fily and stuff for myself while its reasonably priced. Overall, Thanksgiving is definitely my favorite holiday and I love it because I realize how blessed and thankful I truly am whether or not I show it all the time.

Come to the dark side, Luke - Ben Grossman

I think a person can't really be defined as good or evil. It's their actions that are good or evil. Even if someone commits a lot of good actions that doesn't mean they can't commit any bad actions. Everyone in their lives has done something their not proud of or that would be considered bad. For example lying to your teacher about the homework you didn't do. Does lying make you an evil person? I don't think so. That one bad thing doesn't mean you're evil. After someone does something bad like lying then they could turn right around and do something good like donating to charity .

I think there will always be good and bad actions, but not necessarily good or bad people. One side will never be able to eliminate the other side. You can't stop everyone from lying or stealing , but you can do something good for someone else. Hopefully there will be more good actions than bad actions.

Ignorant people really bother me. It's those people that Tweet, Instagram and blog like they know everything in the world when in reality they do not. The simplest way to get these people off the internet is to eradicate the internet entirely. This will benefit everyone in the long run. In addition to keeping stupid people of the World Wide Web, making uninformed posts and making themselves look dumb, this would also solve the electronic addiction present in the US. It may seem rash and ridiculous, but it's the only answer to the problem of being bothering by ignorant people. Say goodbye to those uninformed idiots on your Facebook ranting about the political system, because without the access to internet, they will be forced to keep their wrong opinions to themselves.

Technology has always been a huge influence in my life. I like to think its mainly been positive but that might not be true. The time when it had the biggest effect was when i was about 7 and i got my first video-game system, a Gameboy. With it i got my first video-game ever, Pokemon Sapphire. I loved it, in fact if my parents had let me i would've played it all day everyday. This sparked a love of video-games and electronics that continues to this day. Since then i have moved on from the Gameboy to other game systems like the Xbox and 3ds. I also have a laptop that i play games on and an Iphone. Even with these i still have my old Gameboy though its a little beaten up. Every now and then i get it out and play for a little while. The Gameboy and Pokemon Sapphire will always be special to me.

No one in my house or family enjoys Thanksgiving as much as I do. I mean, who wouldn't love a holiday devoted to just eating?

In the past, we would go down to my parents' friends' house in Columbus, Georgia (whom they met when they first got married) and we would spend Thanksgiving with them, where we would laugh and reminisce on old times. The past couple of years we have not been able to do that due to family matters with their family as well as ours, so we've just been home for the holiday and invited old friends over.

We don't usually spend Thanksgiving with some of our extended family that lives in northern Kentucky or Ohio mainly because they normally spend it with their other side of the family. My grandma lived with us for 7 years, so usually it was our whole family of 5 plus her, but this year was our first holiday spent without her presence. This year, it was only my family as well as one of my sister's stoner friends. Our Thanksgiving meal usually includes the basics such as turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes, as well as some of our household favorites like squash casserole, sweet potato casserole, cranberry sauce, and various desserts.

Thanksgiving is my favorite because you spend all day laying around the house helping cook the meal, feast until you can't move anymore, and then take the best nap of the entire year. I also would like to add how much I hate that Thanksgiving barely gets any recognition and is overshadowed by Black Friday and Christmas.

Flying Turkeys- Andrew Collins

It would be a lie to say that my thanksgiving is anything but cliche. We gather, cook the food that wouldn't have traveled well, and then we dine. We watch the football game, and many members of the family nap. Nothing special there.

Until they moved a few years ago, we traded thanksgiving between my house and my great Aunt's house (who used to live in the same neighborhood). Our location is fairly centralized for the family as a whole, so the location was never really debated. That tradition stopped when they moved, which led to the attempted creation of a new tradition: main meal at our house, and then dessert at theirs. However, that tradition only lasted for maybe a year or two, and I can say with certainty that it didn't happen this year. Since then, it has been held at our house every year.

Its a bit of a stretch, but you could say that part of our tradition is cutting down a tree on thanksgiving morning every 17 years. Before I was born, my dad and his dad cut down an aging crab apple tree from our yard, where an ash tree was planted soon after. Unfortunately, the ash tree was split badly this year during a storm, and had to be removed. My dad had been removing sections of it for a few months now, and with the help of his dad and I, the final sections were removed. So I guess that in another 17 years, whoever lives here will have to remove the next tree.

Response to prompt 2— There are so many adventures I want to have. Doing more rock climbing, learning to ride a horse, going on a mountain biking trip, backpacking in Alaska, etc. But for this prompt I’ll describe an ideal mountain biking trip. I’m not sure where I exactly would go (I don’t know where to find a good mountain biking trail..) but I would like to go with a few of my guy friends and some adult men for sure. Maybe some leaders from my church or our dads. We’d go a day at a time across long trails at high downhill speeds near the edge of a cliff for added risk factor. At night we’d build a nice fire and cook some food, praying and talking about real stuff like what it means to be a real man of God and what it looks like to live in the full masculinity God gave us, receiving leadership from the adults who have gone before us. We’d camp for the night, wake up early and get going again. Praying for the opportunity to do that sometime, hopefully soon.

My Thanksgiving has gone the same way every year that I can remember. We drive up to Mokena, Illinois (a small town on the outskirts of Chicago) on the Tuesday before thanksgiving. We stay with my dad's mom. Wednesday we do some grocery shopping and that night always have dinner and hang out with my cousins who live a couple blocks away. Thanksgiving Day is spent all day at my grandma's house, lounging around watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and a boatload of football. Around 5 is when dinner's ready and my family, my grandma, and my cousin's all eat together. After dinner is when we eat pie and watch Friends which is always on every year. The day after Thanksgiving we drive to Lake Zurich, Illinois for the day and spend time at my uncle's house with my mom's side of the family. I kid you not this is literally the exact same routine every year and I love it.

Flying Turkeys—Gabriel Molina

Well for my family’s thanksgiving, we usually would go up to North Carolina to visit my mom’s side of the family. We generally stay there for three or four days. Now that is quite an interesting scene. The number of people present in one house tends to be somewhere around 15–20. And, now that my close family is wholeheartedly devoted to Jesus, there tends to be a little bit of conflict from our jewish and atheist relatives. Now add to all that the fact that my mom’s family is entirely Russian. Most of the traditional thanksgiving foods I can barely even pronounce, let alone feast upon.

However, this year we decided to have a wonderful American thanksgiving here at home. We invited a family from church to celebrate with us and it turned out really well. I loved it. And on top of that I has an inexhaustible list of things to be thankful for. God has poured out His love and blessing over my life so much. I love getting to celebrate all He has done and is doing. “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever.” (Psalm 136:1)

Changes! - Julia Wilson

Same sex marriage is taking over the country and needs to be put to an end immediately. It is destroying society as we know it. There are many reasons it's wrong. I will discuss a couple of them. First of all in the bible it says that "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination." Lev 18:22-23. As we all know, everyone in the United States is aligned with Christian values. In fact, The Bible is just as powerful as The Constitution! This piece of scripture, written thousands of years ago is overwhelming evidence that we as a country shouldn't let the gays get married. If we don't allow their marriage they're bound to stop being gay. Not only is gay marriage an abomination to Christians everywhere, it's an abomination to the sanctitude of marriage itself. People like Kim Kardashian and Britney Spears have proven that only straight couples can have meaningful marriages. Plus, not allowing same sex marriages will decrease the chances of more homosexuals being reproduced. Because gay children come from gay parents. Together we can fight as a nation to stop our progressive society and keep ourselves in a state of perfect inequality.

In my 5th hour english class I sit next to Noah Welch. In all honestly I don’t know him that well, given we only see each other in school, but I suppose I can fill 150 words. We are seated next to each other in two of our shared classes: Spanish and English. One thing I tend to notice about him is his pursuit of decent grades. He studies for tests, pays attention in class, and for the most part gets his homework done (even if it’s ten minutes before Spanish.) I guess that reflects the high standards he holds himself to. He’s a pretty determined dude. I would characterize him as the color green and I have no explanation why. In five years, I see him killin’ it in law school (I think he said he wants to be a lawyer) or killin’ it wherever he goes to college. As for an animal, he is like an owl mixed with a wolf-bear-eagle-thing.

Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays.  The holiday falls right after my birthday, there is lots of good food, and school is out.  I also enjoy the cooler weather.  In general for my Thanksgiving, my extended family on my mom’s side travels to our house to visit and celebrate the holiday. Usually, my uncle and grandparents bring their schnauzers, which have more room to romp in my family’s backyard. Typically, my family discusses many various and sundry topics.   Sometimes my sister and I play instruments for my family and other times we play a game of some variety, although some members of my family wouldn’t know what strategy is if it bit them on the nose (little sister I’m looking at you).  When we have a large crowd I enjoy playing Clue. Unfortunately my family also has a bad habit of becoming ill right before the holiday. This year I had the misfortune to catch a cold, which has limited my break but at least I wasn’t sick during a school week.

One thing that bugs me to know end is Black Friday. The idea on paper is fine and dandy: the day after Thanksgiving, stores offer great deals on all of their merchandise that might have otherwise been out of reach of many people, but in reality Black Friday is slowly taking over Thanksgiving and just becoming an extremely chaotic day(s). I think great solution to this problem would be to get rid of money all together so that nobody would worry about getting the best deal and saving the most money on products. That would eliminate Black Friday all together, which is fine by me. People can acquire whatever they need through bartering, or maybe even stealing. Without any currency, people can focus on becoming stealthy and sneaky to steal any products they'd like. I think this is a fantastic idea that would benefit everyone. Nothing could be better than families and even little kids stealing to their heart's content.

I don't believe in true good versus evil, I just think that the beliefs of many people differ so much that  other people appear to be evil. For example, let's take Al Qaeda. I know for a fact that many Americans view them as evil. But did you know that they think the same of Americans? The difference of the values of these two groups of people are a prime example of this good vs. evil. It's simply a matter of perspective, because I'm fairly certain us American's do not think that we are evil, and I do not think that members of Al-Qaeda think they are evil. Another example of someone that we typically view as evil is Adolf Hitler. We believe he is evil for obvious reasons, but Hitler and the Nazis didn't believe that what they were doing was evil. They just hated the Jews. They thought that they were doing good, even when nobody else did. As I said before, it's all a matter of perspective about what is good and what is evil.

I enjoy Thanksgiving a lot. I like this holiday for several reasons. Mainly because my birthday is always right around this time, sometimes even on Thanksgiving, and lets face it, who doesn't love my birthday? Also the food is always very good. My family used to go to California every year because my grandparents on my mom's side have a house out there so we would spend Thanksgiving with that side of the family in a small town called Carmel. Unfortunately, they sold their house and now that whole side of them family goes down to their other house in the Bahamas, but since that is such a hassle to go out of the country and we already go there for Spring Break, we now usually go to Virginia to have Thanksgiving with my dad's side of the family. My aunt and uncle spend all day making food that is to die for and we eat a late Thanksgiving dinner and then fall asleep by the fire. My favorite Thanksgiving food is mash potatoes but stuffing is a close second. However, this year we decided to stay home for Thanksgiving mainly because my brother wanted to come home and see all his friends for the break. We went to Idle Hour Country Club for a late Thanksgiving lunch. I kind of wish we had done a home cooked meal but Idle Hour was fine. Overall Thanksgiving is usually a pretty solid holiday that I enjoy very much.

A world in pictures- Scott Street

As you all know, the town of Ferguson, Missouri has been infested with chaos ever since the event including a police officer and a young man. There have been riots throughout the town, and many teams of riot enforcers have been deployed in the town.
This is a picture of some of the team that was deployed in Ferguson.
Does this tell us something about our society, that we think that destructive riots and the killing of many more people can help to solve a problem? I believe that the people of Ferguson are respectfully entitled to their opinion, yet when it comes to the endangerment of the lives of many more people, it comes to a point where it becomes counterproductive and unnecessary. In the end, these riots will not accomplish anything in the government. They will not pass any policies. They will not accomplish anything except for destruction. I can understand why the people are mad (I may not necessarily agree), but I feel that there is a much better, less implosive way of expressing their opinions without having to have riot teams deployed in the streets to combat these riots.

For the love and hate of television- Scott Street

I believe that it is an absolute disgrace that the Emmy's and other celebrity-centered events receive as much publicity as they do in general, let alone that they receive far more attention than important events such as the Nobel Prizes. Now, I'm not going to come out and bash television, because I do watch quite a bit of it, but I feel like it is still really bad that the Emmy's receive so much attention and the Nobel Prizes receive little to none. It is a good indicator of where our society is heading to: blatant ignorance. If the people in our society care more about television than important life happenings, then the future is very grim for advance. However, I am not worried about the future because there are still many sane people that actually care about the important events, but at the rate we are going at, a growing number of the population will be encompassed by awards shows such as the Emmy's and Grammy's and far less than it already was by the Nobel Prizes.

Prompt 1: Why do people insist on letting people constantly know what is going on with their life?
Prompt 2: Why do people care so much about what is going on with other people's lives?
Prompt 3: How significant really are items such as social media in the long run?
To answer prompt number 3, I believe that social media is hugely insignificant in the long run. Do people honestly thing colleges and employers look at how strong someone's "like game" is? Do you think they look at how high your snapchat score is? Not at all! So why do we feel the need to constantly be paying attention to these seemingly insignificant time traps? (this is kind of bleeding into the other two prompts) I believe that social media such as Instagram helps to seemingly remind someone that they are liked. For example, if a girl gets 200 likes on a post, her self confidence would be greatly boosted because she feels liked. On the other hand, if the like game is "not on fleek", then the girl (or guy, to be equal) will become angry and/or sad and will more than likely delete the post out of embarrassment. My question to those people is: why do you care so much? Your Instagram posts are not going to define what kind of person you are, and on top of that, it will not be of assistance in the real world.

On this date- Scott Street

On October 7, 1777, the American Revolution was in full swing. The patriots had already declared secession from the British Crown, and the fighting had immediately ensued. However, the rebels were being put away rather easily by the very intimidating British Army. However, on this date in 1777, the Continental Army defeated a British invasion at Saratoga. While the battle itself was not that significant, the implications of the victory were enormous. First, this swung the momentum of the war into the favor of the patriots, which was much needed at the time. Secondly, and most importantly, it was a great example of how willing the patriots were to break away from the British, so the French decided to join forces with the Americans to fight the oppressive British. Without the help of the French, the Revolutionary War would have easily been won by the British; that greatly shows the utter importance of the Battle of Saratoga on October 7, 1777.

I never had to choose my subject- Scott Street

Fears- growing apart from companions, snakes
Annoyances- grammar (you're vs. your, etc)
Accomplishments- Doing well in school, swimming, trying to be the best person I can be
Confusions- two-party system
Sorrows- Junk food, netflix
Dreams- Successful, family, happy
Idiosyncrasies- being punctual, drumming on/with everything, tries to be funny (and only succeeds minimally)
Risks- fast driving, skydiving, cliff diving
Beloved possessions- Xbox, friends
Problems- Procrastination (ironic right?)
I am choosing to write my expansion on my confusion of the two-party system. While I indeed succumb to one of the factions of the two party system, I do not entirely agree with it. First of all, there are many more stances and positions on important issues, so why should there be only two parties? Secondly, the two party system does more hurt than help when it comes to campaigning. The two party system just asks for the bashing and slandering of the candidates from the opposing party. Thirdly, we all know that neither of the parties that we currently have are perfect - there's no denying that. If we all had our independent ideas and thoughts of how the government should be run, then we would be free to choose to elect the individual that best suits your beliefs on how the government should be run. Sadly, I feel that not enough people pay attention to politics and government for this to be able to work, and the two party system is the perfect way for people to hide their ignorance about politics. The two party system may be the biggest flaw of American politics.

Flying Turkeys - Anthony Tamasi

Every year on Thanksgiving Day, my family and I gather to have a big meal together. We eat around 4 in the afternoon, so it is not quite dinner not lunch. I do not like to eat much before so that I can save room in my stomach for all the food we have. Usually, we all go to my grandparents' house on their farm at around 2, in order for us to talk and help prepare the meal, and also have some quality family time. However, this year our family came over to our house, because we recently moved, and are able to have a large amount of people over to eat. There were about 20 people who came over, not including my family that lives in our house, so in all about 26. People came over at around 3, and we all helped in any way we could, be it preparing the turkey or setting the table.

I do not really have a best Thanksgiving memory, I just like Thanksgiving Day and the time I get to spend with my family.

Flying Turkeys - Emily Cashman

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday hands down. Every year my mom's entire side of the family comes to town and we all head over to my grandparent's house. We definitely fit the stereotype of a lot of people gathered around a nicely decorated table with way too much food. My dad and two uncles go out in the backyard each year a fry up a turkey as well as some chicken fingers, snickers, and twinkies; all of which are delicious and most certainly nutritious. My younger cousin get the turkey legs all to himself and always devours them. After a lengthy meal we all relax in the family room and watch Christmas Vacation. The entire family, including 7 and 11 year old cousins watch the movie. We can recite just about every line and still laugh at all the jokes even though we've seen it at least 15 times. At about this time during the evening my grandfather never fails to fall asleep in his chair by the fire and softly snore through the rest of the movie. I really do love this holiday.

Flying Turkeys-Leah Noble

Even as a kid, I have always enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday. The food that only comes once a year is always something I look forward to. Because our extended family doesn't live near us, our tradition is usually just going to our closest family-friends' house and having a large midday meal with them. We like to keep it simple and drama free. There is one Thanksgiving I remember well.  I was in second grade and that year we were traveling to Virginia to spend the holiday with my mom's family. It was a year similar to this one with early snow and ice. In the hills of West Virginia an interstate bridge froze over and traffic was at a standstill. We were stuck all night in a cold vehicle waiting for the bridge to be cleared. Luckily though, being the child who always had to be comfortable, I had brought my pajamas in the front with me instead of packing them in my suitcase. At the time, I thought it was really cool and found it fun to be stuck in traffic in the middle of the night. Don't ask me why, but it was always something I had wanted to have happen. The whole night I was excited and therefore didn't get much sleep. Eventually the road was cleared and early Thanksgiving morning we stopped at a motel and spent the rest of the night. It doesn't seem very exciting now, but as a kid, this was quite the adventure.

Changes-Leah Noble

The one reason I hate being in a large crowd is because of the oblivious people who walk as slow as possible and stop in the middle of an area where people are trying to walk. Not to mention the ones that walk into the traffic instead of with the flow. My solution to this, however, should be very familiar and easily implemented in malls, schools, and any other public places. First, I must ask, why is it that we don't have this problem with people driving cars? The answer is simple; traffic laws, stoplights, lanes, stop signs, parking lots, shoulders, etc. Why not do the same for pedestrians, indoors? First, hallways must be divided. One must travel on the right side of the road. Second, add stoplights and left turn lanes to main intersections to make it easy to get where you need to go, without all the bumping and chicken-playing people do trying to turn left. Third, add shoulders or areas that people can stop to do whatever they feel needs stopping to do. One may ask, how are you going to get people to comply with this? My reply, or rather my question, is, how do we get motorists to comply? Traffic laws; rules that, if not followed, result in consequences. In public, give tickets that violators have to pay; at schools, referrals, detention, and safe should suffice. By turning our indoor public walking areas into places where traffic laws and systems apply, everyone will get to where they are going faster and without the annoyances and inconveniences that some people cause.

Brave Little Toaster-Leah Noble

My cover slides off and is conveniently placed under me revealing to me the light and atmosphere of my favorite place: math class. I am a calculator. A TI-84 graphing calculator to be specific (never should I be mistaken for those lowlife scientifics or worse, four functions). I find my user often has mixed emotions about me, sometimes praising me for my help on an otherwise impossible math problem or slamming me on the table when I "don't work properly" ( although it's always user error). My day consists of mostly staying in my owner's black hole of a backpack with a "smart phone" who is not nearly as smart as me, despite its many illogical arguments against me. Unfortunately, my arguments with the smart phone always end with it asking, "Who gets used more often?" and we all know the answer to that. Getting pulled out midway through the day though is glorious. I become the only thing that stands between the completion of a task, so I think my hardest and make sure to do just what my user wants, well, as long as they press the right buttons. I am deeply hurt when I know what needs to be done and my user just cannot figure it out and thus abandons the problem. My life is full of shining moments and deep depressions. Sometimes I go days on end without being touched by delicate, young hands or even without getting a glimpse of light. All in all, my life is good, if only I could outsmart that smart phone and become the number one priority in the life of my owner.

Flying Turkeys-Emily Chavez

Turkey Day is my favorite day. Thanksgiving with the Chavez clan varies from year to year. Some years we are back home in Colorado, some years we are cozy in our home, or some years we just spend the day with close friends. This year we spent Thanksgiving with family friends. We ate and we laughed, and being surrounded by people we loved was enough to make the day perfect.
My favorite Thanksgiving memory is the Turkey Table Tennis Tournament our friends used to host in Florida. When I lived in there, we would create a bracket and play in a ping pong tournament. I never won, but it was always so much fun to play and to watch. I love that Thanksgiving is the kick-off of the Christmas season, but nothing beats just reflecting on family, friends and other things I'm thankful for. I also really like the food, especially the bread rolls.
Thanksgiving isn't a bunch of traditions for my family. It's giving thanks no matter where we are or who we are with. But nevertheless, it is my absolute favorite holiday.

BOO—Gabriel Molina

So zombies have just attacked. Here is my plan:

Pray. I pray about everything. But I’d definitely pray against fear because if I died, I’d be in paradise within a few seconds so I’d like to enjoy my zombie fighting without fear. I’d stick with my dad for a while because he owns a revolver, and hopefully head over to my neighbors house to borrow a firearm of my own. Then I’d have some fun shooting.

Another scenario is that I would pray for healing over zombies I came into contact with. I’ve seen Jesus heal broken arms and headaches and all sorts of infirmities, so if He was willing I’m sure He would heal some zombies. Those who were healed would stay in our home or at least with me and my family. We wouldn't really be worried or anything because the Lord is with us. We’d just make the most of it. Have fun, pray, heal more zombies in Jesus’ name, etc. So if zombies ever do become a reality, I’m looking forward to it.

What Is It Good For?—Gabriel Molina

Yes there is most definitely appropriate time for war. No offense against the Mennonites, I am Christian as well, but the bible specifically says that God is a mighty warrior (Jeremiah 20:11, Zephaniah 3:17). He never shies away from the right fight. Just read the book of Joshua and you will quickly find that our God is not a pacifist.

As for these current issues like the ones mentioned in the prompt, I don’t always know whether war is the right response or not. It’s pretty clear when the leader of a nation asks and listens to the Lord whether to go to war or not, but our presidents don’t tend to lead that way currently. With some of these current issues, I believe the right decision is incredibly obvious. For example, the ISIS beheadings of Americans. I believe that is an example of something we need to fight against.

So basically it depends. Pointless war is of course stupid. But God is not against the right kind of battle, and there are certain things and situations that require us to fight.

I Never Had to Choose My Subject—Gabriel Molina

Fears: not being able to handle what God might call me to. (which is a lie, but I still fear it sometimes.)
Annoyances: people who deal with their issues by hitting people
Accomplishments: just following Jesus, because anything I’ve accomplished comes from Him
Confusions: hatred of God, atheism
Sorrows: people who don't know how much God loves them
Dreams: to travel around the world sharing the love of God
Idiosyncrasies: crazy about Jesus
Risks: giving my life and preferences for the gospel
Beloved Possessions: approval from people (then), my relationship with the Lord (now)
Problems: effective communication

My beloved possession from then was approval from people. Now, above all, I treasure my relationship with my Father who loves me regardless of my performance. Rooted deep in our hearts is the need for approval. And it’s not a bad thing in and of itself, but we often end up looking in all the wrong places. I used to chase approval in girls, grades, sports, among other things. None of them could satisfy. They were never meant to. In 2012, when Jesus revealed to me the stability I could have living in His relentless love and in the identity of who He says I am, I said yes and received it. I gave up my vain pursuit of worldly approval and began to receive the truth that God’s love for me was unconditional. And it didn’t stop there. Every day is an adventure as He continues to shape my identity and help me to walk in the fullness of who I was made to be. It’s changing everything as I choose to participate in this transformation adventure He is leading me in.

What is it good for?- Scott Street

War is widely viewed as a negative thing. But think about a world without war. Better yet, think about if the United States decided to take a pacifist approach. Other countries would just roll over us at even the slightest conflict! A non-pacifist approach is absolutely necessary if we want our country to be a global power. Yes, war is bad and results in many casualties and hardships and whatnot, but without war, the conflicts that the wars resulted from would not be resolved. And without war, we would be allowing terroristic groups such as ISIS to control the world. All in all, whenever someone brings up the idea of a pacifist society, I agree that it would be temporarily peaceful, but in the long run, it is just not a conventional proposition. In addition, people that enlist in the army would not receive any benefits in a pacifist society, and that is just completely impractical. As terrible as it sounds, the world needs war.

The bane of evil itself is what frightens me the most: Serpents. My fear of them has no personal origin, yet I've had my encounter with these nasty creatures. 90 percent of them result in my running into the house to find shelter, and the other 10 percent consists of me killing the snake because everyone else in your family is too scared to do something about it (yes this includes my father as well). I'm not sure what exactly it is about snakes that really gets me. Maybe it's the forked tongue, maybe it's the serpentine movement of its body. I'm not sure. All I know is that I read a book in elementary school about a snake that went through the plumbing and came out of the toilet, and ever since that day, I have been extremely paranoid about using the restroom. I can credit that fear directly to snakes, and that's just one of the many reasons why I despise snakes.

When you talk about Zach Whitehouse, there are endless things that you can say. From his unreasonable obsession over the rapper B.O.B to his fright of dogs, he is definitely a character. Sometimes, having daily discussions with him can drive you insane with his level of stubbornness, but most other times he is a joy to converse with. His humor is unique, and some may call it strange, but it is surely very entertaining, to say the least. He loves to play soccer, even though sometimes some of his actions on the field are very questionable. If I could compare him to one animal, it would be a hippo, because they sure know how to put on a show for an audience and can be mean when they need to be. All in all, Zach is a very eccentric character who is a joy to be around, even if he tries to reason with you when there is no reason present.

Celene the cell phone was a very active phone. She was constantly being used throughout the day. She starts of the day with plenty of energy and ready for whatever comes her way. However, by about 10:30, she feels like half of her energy is gone. And it's worse by 11:45, where she feels like 90% of her energy is gone. But alas! she reaches lunch without completely running out of energy and she is overjoyed to be connected to the nearest power outlet. Oh, how she longed for this moment to come! But even after the brief recharge period, only about 60% of her energy is restored. She just needs to make it to 3:45 without losing energy. Can she do it? 3:15 reaches and she only has 10% of her energy left! Oh no! She is feeling very lackadaisical and drowsy but she only needs to last 30 more minutes. Her normally luminescent bright light has become very dim as she tries to hold on for dear life. When her owner gets home, she is hanging on by a thread at 1% of her energy left, but she made it! She finally made it! All of the recharge time she needs and no fear of certain death. This is how she concludes her day, and over the night, she gets to fully charge up for the next action-packed day to come.

Why do people think of drug cartels in such a negative connotation? There are many positive things that come directly as a result from these federations. I propose that we should allow drug cartels to be run in the United States. Will violence and deaths spike? It's a possibility. But let's forget about the negatives right now. Let's think of the positives. This brings a whole new economy into play that can help many poor people out of rough situations. And, of course, you can't forget about the pleasure that runs the industry.  Sure, at first thought, bringing drug cartels to the United States sounds like a detrimental idea that could wreak havoc on the country (which is certainly a possibility) however, if you think a little deeper about it, it keeps sounding better and better.
That is my modest proposal.

Do you know your neighbor? - Isabel Jenkins

Anne Russell and I go way back. Well, to sixth grade homeroom/pre-algebra with Mr. Jenkins.* We were seated at separate tables based on last name, therefore, I only got a few glimpses at Anne's face. So few, in fact, that for the first month of school I got her and Samantha McGehee confused. ("Did you get a new lunch box? No? I could've sworn it was pink with brown polka dots yesterday..." To this day, I still can't figure out why. They don't even look alike.)

But then came 7th grade Spanish. Of course the one day I was absent we picked our seats, and Anne and I got the short end of the stick and ended up sitting a row below all our other friends. But this short stick became a major turning point in our relationship, full of doodling on each other's papers and much yelling from our Señora (Isa! Anne! Silencio!).

Although we had plenty of other middle school memories, we didn't do much of anything together outside of class. Nothing, really, until World History last year. Anne and I became "study buddies" as suggested by Mr. Wise, and this has continued through US History. I'm not sure how it works, considering we are both non-history buffs who spend most of our study time making a lovely racket with her guitar and my violin, but we've somehow managed to finish with A's.

We like to bond over our lack of history knowledge, random talent at badminton, and mutual frustration with the American education system and other aspects of life. But this has been a lot of "we" - let's talk about Anne Russell as a single person. If you know anything at all about Anne, it's probably that she's FREAKISHLY SMART. Like, never ever gotten a B ever. She's a math and science whiz, and even though she says English is one of her worst subjects she has to be lying.

Not to mention she's an insanely talented singer and pianist who can just pick up playing random instruments like the ukelele. (Well, maybe not the violin. Sorry Anne, you're not alone.) She's friendly and welcoming and funny, too... we are all jealous from afar. Or, in my case, from my seat right next to you in English class. :)

*By the way... NOT my dad, even though half of that pre-algebra class asked me at some point.

On October 1st, 1908, The Ford Model T, the first car for millions of Americans, hit the market. I chose this event because I did a national history day project on this event in middle school. This was definitely what I would call a good event. At that time, very few Americans owned cars mainly because they just couldn't afford one. They were mainly for the elite, those who were wealthy enough to own one. However, Henry Ford set out to create a car that would be efficient and affordable for all Americans. In this process he invented the manufacturing assembly line and the Model T, of which over 15 million were eventually sold. I believe this is an important event because Ford made the car affordable for everyone. Almost every American drives a car today, and it wouldn’t have been possible if Ford did not invent the assembly line and go first in the production of the Model T.

Flying Turkeys- Kaitlyn Nunnelley

My family's Thanksgiving definitely looks like the stereotypical Thanksgiving. My cousins from Missouri drive in for the break and we eat at my grandmother's house. We have that nicely decorated table with a large turkey and a ridiculous amount of extra food. My grandma always cooks a turkey, her famous mashed potatoes, cole slaw, stuffing, sweet potato casserole (my favorite), and a slew of other fattening foods. We usually have left overs for days so we never have to make new food. After we eat we usually sit around the fire and play board games.
We usually also do a Thanksgiving at my dad's mom's house, but this year she and my other cousins went to Florida for break so we didn't celebrate with them. But when we do it's great fun. We have yet another stereotypical Thanksgiving with turkey, ham, mac and cheese, green beans, and potatoes and more.
This time of year is my favorite because it's so warm and loving and friendly.

Changes- Kaitlyn Nunnelley

Bullying. Bullying overweight people. Bullying skinny people. Bullying nerds. There's a million different types of bullying. Many kids, especially girls my age are self conscientious and worry about their bodies', whether they be overweight, slightly overweight, slender, or very skinny. Many can't help how they look and seek out a solution to help this, sometimes harmful like anorexia or suicide. A quote from Hannah Montana, "You can change your hair and you can change your clothes, you can change your mind that's just the way it goes," shows that you can't help some aspects of how you look, but you can change your outlook on that.

So I propose a solution to the harsh bullying some kids receive about parts of themselves they cannot change: the bulliers, should be injected with a serum to put whatever they're bullying someone about onto their body. So if a thinner girl is bullying an overweight girl, this thin girl should be given the serum to make her overweight. Or if a bigger, bulkier, heavier boy is bullying a smaller, thinner, lighter boy about his frame, the heavier boy should be transformed into the smaller frame. By doing this it would push bullies into the fear that they would lose their own precious body and they would stop bullying other kids.

Brave Little Toasters- Kaitlyn Nunnelley

I am an Apple phone charger. I suck quite frankly, but you need me so you have to live with it. I come home all pretty and new in a pristine white box with a grey apple on the front. Wrapped all safe and snug. I spend all day plugged into an outlet, or lugged around in a backpack or purse. I try to make friends with all the dust bunnies I run into while hanging from the outlet under the bed. I only get to see the light when I'm pushed into a phone and the life is sucked through me and into the phone. The more times I'm pushed in and pulled out, I start to wear and tear. I get wrinkles on my neck as I get older. Eventually, my cords will separate from my head and I will be of no use to you anymore and I die. You'll go into the store again to buy one of my brothers or sisters and do the same to them.

Do You Know Your Neighbor?-Kaitlyn Nunnelley

Will Mathews, the biggest savage I know. I've known him since Cassidy kindergarten, Mrs.Bond's class. Will and I started becoming friends when he and my cousin Wyatt became close and I was occasionally around for their play dates. We usually always go to the same parties, considering we have the same friend group. Will and I should know more about each other, given how long we've known each other, but we don't really. Just general things. Will goes to Cathedral Domain every year, a camp out in Irvine, that I used to attend. If I had to pick a color to describe him it would probably be blue because he always seems very easy going, calm, and flexible. As an animal he would probably be a dog since he's easy going and always likes to have a good time. In 5 years I can definitely see Will graduating from a high class college and moving on in his life to have a wonderful family and job.

What is it good for-Kate Sommer

I believe that there is an appropriate time for war, but not the extent and frequency that America thinks there is. I'd like to say that there is a peaceful alternative for war where the countries can figure things out with out forcing people to give there lives in cruel and vicious battle, but there's not. As we know some these groups, such as Al Qaeda, don't respond to peaceful attempts. They only respond to and via violence. Other times war is decided based on what the American people want. For example, if we didn't go to war after the 9/11 attacks there would probably be even more disapproval of the government based just on the time and situation of the nation. Sadly there are some people that only react to violence and there are some situations that will only change when violence is brought into play. While I wish there was a peaceful alternative to war, sometimes there just isn't based on the people we're against and the situation we're in.

BOO-Kate Sommer

What scares me most? A lot of things scare me. I hate horror movies, I despise bugs (especially spiders), and I'm just a jumpy person in general (ask any of my friends). But the thing that by far scares me the most is the prospect of losing my family. To be honest, I'm not that close to my dad's side of the family, but a couple months ago when my great-grandfather (granddaddy) died i found myself crying on the other side of the phone. I'm a sensitive person in general, the idea of people i know dying mixed with my sensitivity results in a sad Kate. I'm very close to my mom's side of the family. I talk to my grandparents at least once a month and I'm constantly texting my cousin. The idea of losing a member of my family- to a tragic event, disease, or just natural causes-is one of the few things that I have night mares about. I'm a family oriented person, I don't even want to go consider a college unless it's within a few hours of some part of my family. If I lost someone in my family (and i know it will inevitably happen) things just wouldn't be the same.

Do You Know Your Neighbor-Kate Sommer

Currently my neighbor is Amelia Rogers. While we haven't known each other long I'd like to think I know a bit about her and I'd like to consider her my friend. I feel like I met Amelia some time in Freshman year, but to be honest I don't remember all that well. I know that we were in AP World and English together last year and I think we actually became friends when we had to work on an English propaganda project together. I know that Amelia is super nice and funny and when I'm having a crappy day I can almost always count on her to say something that'll make me laugh. I can't even remember what she said but there was one comment she made one day that had us laughing for a good 5 minutes. Other than being a kind and friendly person, Amelia has a great fashion sense and I always love seeing what outfits she'll put together. I enjoy sitting next to Amelia and it's great to sit next to someone I get along with.

Brave Little Toasters-Kate Sommer

I'm a laptop. Everyday my buttons are pressed. Literally. Some days more than others. Sometimes I spend my whole day closed up, sitting on a little black ottoman in a pink room with Christmas lights hanging year round. Other times, like now, I'm used all day. My lights constantly on, music playing through my speakers, multiple tabs open on my browser. Sometimes when she uses me she's angry. She smashes at my keys with tears streaming down her face and words flowing onto the screen because I'm her only relief, her only confidant. Sometimes she's happy, laughing at the videos playing on my screen, smiling at the pictures of her favorite bands, or showing something to her best friend. I'm the only one that sees every side of her, the sides she doesn't show at school or in public. I'm the only one who knows all her secrets. And I'll always keep them behind my password request screen.

Judgmental People. Always telling you what you should and shouldn't do. Trying to run lives that aren't their's. People try to ignore them, but they're everywhere. Here's my idea: isolation. Take away their internet, remove them from society, it's not like they're contributing anything meaningful. If we take away the internet from the internet trolls what else do they have to do. If we remove these awful judgmental people from society and put them on their own separate land where that have no contact with anyone else and they can't do harm to anyone but each other, then society will be better for it. Maybe they'll finally understand how they make other people feel and stop their judgmental ways. It isn't your decision to say what music people are allowed to like or what hobbies/interests they're allowed to have.

Flying Turkeys-Kate Sommer

Overall, I really enjoy Thanksgiving. We get to eat food that we normally don't have and you don't get yelled at for eating what your parents deem too much food. Over the past couple years- once I became old enough- I've cooked some part of the meal, usually the dessert. 2 years ago I made peanut butter and chocolate cheesecake. Last year I made Chocolate Chip cheesecake. And today I made Snickers pie. I really like baking and when I can do it for a special occasion for my family it makes it that much better. My best thanksgiving memory is about 3 or 4 years ago when my cousins, aunt, and uncle from Florida came up. I'm the second oldest cousin on that side of the family so when we were watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade I would give my sister and my cousins each a piggyback ride at commercial breaks. The best thing about that visit was that the day they were leaving they got to see snow for their first time, which was really special.

BOO-Kaitlyn Nunnelley

I think what scares me the most would be anything, ANYTHING, bad happening to my little sister. Even though she's only two years younger than me, sometimes I treat her like she's my own daughter. I'm super protective over her. You read all these stories and articles in the news and on social media of young girls being kidnapped by serial killers or being gang raped at UVA. I know that's slightly far-fetched that I think that could happen to Caroline, but you never know. I worry like a mother when she goes out and does slightly sketchy things with her friends or when she's hanging around a suspicious group of people. Also if she does choose to drink she could be roofied by some guy and then we could maybe never see her again. I would put my life on the line for my sister, even though she's one of the most selfish people I know. My biggest fear is that she doesn't live her life to the fullest and be the happiest she can possibly be.

What is it good for?- Kaitlyn Nunnelley

Is there a time for war? I believe that yes sometimes there is. Sometimes it's morally right and sometimes it isn't. When other countries have made threats towards ours and civil talking or negotiations or treaties cannot fix it, or other countries declare war on countries that cannot defend  themselves, war is okay, it's morally okay for our country to intervene. if diplomacy can solve the issue then that is the route to take but if diplomacy is not an option then war is an acceptable option. For instance, the United States has attempted diplomacy with the Taliban but they never want too cooperate so now we have to take violent action to stop them from taking violent action against innocent civilians. sometimes countries do not need to intervene in matters of other countries. A country can solve its own problems and doesn't need interference from other countries sometimes, but when the government asks for assistance then other countries can come to its aid in a diplomatic way or a violent way.

I Never Had to Choose My Subject- Kaitlyn Nunnelley

Fears: anything bad happening to my sister
Annoyances: when drivers don't use their blinkers, when drivers are bad drivers, loud screeching noises, when someone mentions something and won't finish their thought
Accomplishments: super long hair, swim and cheer awards, straight A's through middle school, getting into the Academy
Confusions: unfair treatment
Sorrows: temperamental
Dreams: to travel the world like my mom and grandparents have, be successful and happy in life
Idiosyncrasies: book nerd, super long hair
Risks: driving
Beloved: family, friends, weekends
Problems: being temperamental, not listening or paying attention

I'm going to elaborate on my annoyances. I have awful road rage. I don't understand why people when they're turning don't use their blinkers. It's there for a reason. It's annoying because I don't know if they're stopping or if they're pulling over or if they're turning and I can go around them. It's just annoying especially if the person is already a sucky driver. Another driving pet peeve is when people just idle or go 20 miles per hour down Chinoe or Fontaine. I just ride their bumper (which I know is dangerous) until they turn or pull over. They go so slow and it always seems to happen when I have somewhere to be at a certain time. I think those are my only two driving annoyances. My mom and I both hate loud screeching noises like plates being slammed or silverware being slammed onto plates or spontaneous annoying loud screams. When people say "oh my god Kaitlyn I have to tell you blah blah blah" and then they don't finish and just go off on a tangent or do something else annoys me. Why can't they just finish the thought and not keep me in suspense? These are my main annoyances, or at least the ones I can think of right now.

On This Date- Kaitlyn Nunnelley

September 29th, 2009. On this date the Samoan Islands experienced an 8.1 magnitude submarine earthquake, the largest earthquake of 2009. It caused a tsunami that generated substantial damage and death in Samoa, American Samoa, and Tonga. The waves measured 46 feet high at their highest on the Samoan Coast. More than 189 people were killed. The largest city in American Samoa sustained heavy damage in the tsunami, with its main street flooded, cars overturned, and shoreline businesses damaged. The water system was also damaged and the supply of fresh water to American Samoa was disrupted. President Obama declared this a major disaster and allowed federal funds to be used for rescues, life support and public health and safety measures. The eastern side of the Samoan Island remained without water supplies or power after the earthquake. The cost of damages was estimated at $147.25 million. Aid came mainly from New Zealand, Australia, the United States, and Canada.
I don't appreciate this event, nor do I loathe it. Earthquakes and tsunamis cause great devastation all around the world. Many organizations and aids were set up throughout various countries to provide help to this region.

Changes - Caleb Combs

Overcrowding of schools is becoming an increasingly prevalent problem in our society today.  Hallways are packed with hordes of students, violently moving from class to class, shoving anyone or anything that gets in their way.  Hallways are an absolute madhouse, and the teachers and hall monitor accomplish nothing.  The sheer numbers of students is no match for the few authorities that attempt to keep order in school.  I feel that a perfect solution for this problem would to provide our hallway authorities with firearms that could be used any time on students that are being disruptive.  This would completely eliminate the problem, whereas a detention would do nothing more than delay the issue.  Elimination of a student using one of these firearms would not be considered a crime, as it is protection for the other students.  The disrespect shows by these hallway hooligans would be eliminated completely.  Finally, this would save parents from having to deal with these obnoxious students at home.  This solution is very effective, and should be implemented immediately.

For the Love & Hate of Television- Kaitlyn Nunnelley

Personally I watch a lot of TV. There is always at least one TV on in my house. If someone is in their room, the TV is on, even if we're doing homework. If someone is downstairs, the TV is on, even if we're eating a meal. My sister and I watch a lot of Netflix, actually that's all we watch. My mom prefers to watch the news or her recordings of previous drama series or action series she missed the night before.
TV definitely can be excessive at some points, a distraction, and even a bad influence, but it is a good form of entertainment. Families and friends can bond over TV time and common interests in shows. You can even multitask without it taking up too much of your attention. TV is a convenient delivery system for advertisers to send out their messages to the masses. That's why you see clever and new commercials during highly televised events that a lot of our population watches, like the Superbowl, The Emmy's, Grammy's, AMA's. A lot of these commercials are beneficial because the audience can see new products they'd like to buy for their benefit. We all watch these events to root for your home team or see the new styles all the celebrities are wearing or see your favorite stars and musicians take the stage.
I think our country is kind of a shallow country, caring more about the latest fashion and celebrities and football teams instead of the people further advancing our nation, the ones earning Nobel Prizes and Pulitzer Prizes. Honestly I didn't even know that the Nobel Prizes were announced on television. This is bad because half of us probably don't even know what these are, nor the people who win them.

Flying Turkeys- Amelia Rogers

Thanksgiving is my third favorite holiday. I like to say that the countdown to Christmas starts with Thanksgiving. Traditionally, my family’s Thanksgiving starts with watching the Macy’s Day Parade while we (my mom) start cooking. Once we get ready and finish cooking, we go to my grandparent’s house about 30 minutes away. All of my dad’s family meets there, and we finish getting dinner ready and eat together. Then we play games and watch football while my Papaw takes a nap.

My favorite Thanksgiving memory was about four years ago. My cousin and his wife couldn’t come home for Thanksgiving until Friday, so we moved our family dinner back a day. My cousin, Allison, and I spent the night with my grandparents on Thursday night. Allison is ten years older than I am, and we’re really close, but that was probably the first sleepover we had where we just laughed and told stories and hung out together like best friends. When we woke up on Friday morning, it had snowed! It was beautiful and so unexpected. We spent the whole day helping my Mamaw cook Thanksgiving dinner and learning from her cooking expertise. I will always remember that Thanksgiving.

The World in Pictures- Kaitlyn Nunnelley

Rosie the Riveter. Although women took on male dominated trades during World War II, they were expected to return to their everyday housework once men returned from the war. Rosie inspired a social movement that increased the number of working women by 57% from 1949 to 1944. Women began to prove to themselves and their country that they too could do a man's job. Rosie convinced women that they had a patriotic duty to enter the workforce. She has been an icon since 1940 and has forever opened the work force to women while providing the foundation for the contemporary women's movement. This war time propaganda boosted morale during the war and recruited more female workers, inspiring the rights women enjoy today and equality to men.

Assignment 14 :Flying Turkeys

The stock image Thanksgiving involves a lot of people around a nicely decorated table with a large turkey and a ridiculous amount of extra food. This image doesn't always depict the reality of the holiday though.

What does your Thanksgiving look like? Do you enjoy the holiday? What is your strangest or most wonderful memory of the holiday?

Changes- Mckenna Elliott

Racism in our society is becoming mainstream due to our numbness to our words as they slip into casual, daily conversations. Many of us do not consider ourselves racist, despite the fact that most everyone says slightly racist things on a regular basis. Our country has come a long way to get where we are now, although it is seeming as though we are beginning to back track as racism resurfaces in our daily lives.

A simple solution that has the ability to eradicate this problem is forced interracial marriages facilitated by local government officials who could specialize in matchmaking. This would decrease the likelihood of one becoming a racist or even thinking and/or saying racist things. It's simple, yet effective.

Changes- Caroline Totty

Something that bothers me a lot, especially in high school, is FOMO or fear of missing out. What it is is just that, fear of missing out and almost everyone falls victim to it. People can't stand to go out of town or have something else to do in fear of missing a party or a tailgate or a concert. It really bothers me because what people don't realize is the social aspect of high school is sort of irrelevant. Once you get to college nobody is going to remember if you didn't go to that one party because you had a soccer game or missed that one UK game because you were on a family vacation. I realize in the moment it may seem like you're missing the best party of your life, but I promise you it's high school and it is most definitely not the best party of your life. A solution to the issue of FOMO would be if everyone could see into the future and realize how much it won't matter in four years or so. Hopefully, then people wouldn't freak out every time they missed a social event. So that is my very simple solution to FOMO, make a machine that lets everyone see their future.

Changes- Amelia Rogers

America is a consumer driven society, where people are too focused on money.  As we approach the holiday season, this consumer-crazy environment is on full display.  The quasi-holiday Black Friday is spilling over into the beautiful American tradition of Thanksgiving, with stores now opening on Thursday night for extra shopping hours.

In the interest of preserving our country, I propose a simple solution— we get rid of currency.

Without any money, people will quickly become less worried about material things and focus on what’s more important. People will spend more time with their families and friends during the holidays, and carry the joy of that season with them all year long. Without currency, a bartering system will develop, and people will get out and connect with their neighbors, creating a greater sense of community. This will strengthen our country and revive our patriotism. There will no longer be a need for banks, so robbery will decrease greatly, and thieves can find good jobs. Also, animosity between rich and poor will vanish, as the rich will no longer have money to flaunt around.

Overall, getting rid of currency will strengthen our nation and save us from the monster of consumerism.

Changes- Andrew Collins

The American bipartisan system is quite ridiculous when compared to other modern governments. Most European countries have at least 5 major parties, while we in America pretend that there are only two sides to every issue and writhe around in our old-fashioned system. There really is a simple solution to this issue, and I'm genuinely surprised that it hasn't been though up yet. Or perhaps it has, and the bright mind was not willing to share. Anyways:

I propose that we rewrite the way in which we vote. The current system of voter anonymity and need of riches to win is outdated and best suited for the late 18th century. In order to reduce these nuisances, I propose that we change election day into a national holiday where everyone gets off work. Once everyone is off work, they can gather into large auditoriums staged across the country. A political debate between the main candidates of the top 100 or so parties would be streamed to all of these auditoriums. As we all know from the example set forth by our legislatures, the large amount of candidates getting together might actually solve some of the issues that they are arguing, which is another plus of this system. After the debate, each candidates name would be read and the audience's reaction to this would decide the vote. The audio from all the auditoriums would be spliced together and analyzed for boos, cheering and clapping. The candidate with the most positive response overall would be declared the winner. As you can see, this packs all the problems with our current system into a neat little box, and then kicks that box out the window. Plus, no campaign ads would be allowed, so widespread adoption of this method by the public will occur overnight, because no one likes political ads. No one.

Brave Little Toasters- Andrew Collins

I am a cell phone. I've never been able to sort out my emotions; I am always confused. I spend the majority of my life crammed into a small, dark place that I sometimes hear referred to as a pocket. Every few minutes the darkness leaves me and I feel the warmth of a hand, but it usually only lasts for a moment before I am jammed back into the pocket. It isn't all bad in there. Its normally much warmer in the pocket than it is outside, and it gives me a sense of security sometimes. At the beginning of each day, I wake up feeling full of energy, ready to attack the day. But as the day wears on, I find myself feeling less and less energetic, until I hesitate to perform the tasks of the day, in favor of saving my suddenly scarce supply of energy. When I get home and night falls, I'm usually connected to my charger, and it makes the trials of the day all worth it. A warmth fills my circuits as I begin to reach a state of charged. It has its drawbacks, but all in all being a phone isn't a terrible experience.

A proposition for the revitalization of the American school system

As it is well known to all Americans, the American school system is outstanding.  However with all great things, improvements can be made to promote growth, development and change. I propose by following these easy tasks our nation’s students will become great.

I propose that schools enforce mandatory tests and grade checks once a week.  Students waste their time completing extra-curricular activities and sleeping when they could study and prepare for tests. These tests will contain information of a plethora of different subjects that will all be useful in the future of each and every student.  Mandatory grade checks will help relax students as they know that they have to discuss grades with their teachers and counselors.  Mandatory checks will be extremely important for the future of the students.  It might help or hurt their chances for getting into college. Grade checks, of course, will promote a peaceful learning environment where students go to school to promote their own growth and learning capabilities.

I also propose that teachers triple the amount of homework that they give to the students. This will help promote a sense of honesty and industry in the school. We can observe this industry in The Academy. These hardworking, talented, industrious students always complete their homework on time, excel at working as a team, and promote a spirit of community and sharing.

As everyone knows the world is becoming a more competitive place and jobs are becoming harder to obtain. However, if we follow my simple proposal we will help increase the potential of our young students.

One thing that really gets under my skin is homework over the holidays. Weekends included, because they may as well be holidays for how much we build them up. Considering the massive amount of time students spend during the week not only AT school, but at home doing homework, I feel it only makes sense that weekends are our deserved rest time, and that during those times, homework should be off limits. This especially applies to holiday breaks. Thanksgiving and Christmas especially are sacred times to be spent with family and friends, talking, laughing, and making memories together. It is simply ridiculous for teachers to be able to impose upon that cherished time with busy work that will only get in the way. Some teachers agree with this now, but other teachers would require more convincing. I believe that this needs to be active immediately and strictly to show the teachers we mean business. We need to start by making a law against assigning homework during any period in which school is not in session and the punishment for breaking this law ranges from verbal warning, to written warning, to suspension from teaching, to expulsion from the school entirely, to execution depending upon the severity of the crime. This simply must be stopped and we can no longer treat it as a trivial matter. Teachers must face the consequences for their thoughtless actions.

One thing that really bothers me is the adoration for silly and talentless boy bands or any kind of pop singer just because they are ssimply "hot" or "handsome" or "beautiful" or "sexy". How about judging and listening to music based on talent? To fix this problem i propose having a massive singing competition at the beginning of each year for the new aspiring artists . Of the millions of singers and bands that come to this competition, only the top 200 singers/bands from each genre will be allowed to put music on the market and on radios and phones and albums. The judges to this competition will not be the poorly artisticly educated public, but instead by the number 1 finisher of each genre in the very first competition (that competition will be judged by retired stars). The judges will be blind folded when judging so an artist can not when solely on looks. Once a artist finishes in the top 200 for their genre they will not have to ever compete in the competition again. You can compete as kmany times as you want till you finish in the top 200 of a competition.  all possession and distribution music that did not make the cut from the competition will be illegal and the possession/distribution consequences will range from fines to time in jail, prison and possible removal from the states to Siberia. The consequences will be heftier for teens as they are the future of America and the future will not be bright if we have a bunch of teenage girls listening to and having their thoughts twisted by the trash that is One Direction etc. This change in the music industry will result  in a more mentally stable America, a population with the highest IQ scores ever rrecorded better music, less arguments over musical talent, and a brighter future for the otherwise spiraling country due to poor music tastes.

The one thing that bothers me most is the elderly. They are always so mean and just hateful. Even when I am nice, I receive just a rude response. Whether they are from my family or not, I never receive a warm welcoming, or have a pleasant conversation with older folk. As a remedy to this, I propose that we euthanize them all. In my plan, we would give everyone a lethal injection on their 65th birthday. This would spare all of us the cold conversations shared with the elderly and the time and money we have to spend visiting them throughout the year. This would also be profitable for businesses. No more 401K plans are needed, as there will be no need for retirement. No more "seniors discounts" at certain stores or other attractions. You also would not have to be bothered by trying to find a residence for an old person in your family, as they will need assistance as they continue to age. Euthanasia is the most effective solution to this problem, both cost wise and time wise.

Brave Little Toaster- Emily Chavez

I sit silently in her back pocket in the few moments she doesn't have her hands all over me. She's obsessed with me. She has zero self control. I have so many different abilities, it is hard to blame her. She is constantly taking pictures on me, playing games, and communicating with her ever loving friends. I am her addiction, her source of all entertainment. I am her mobile device.
I am brilliant and maybe a little bit conceited. With the way I am glorified, it is so hard to stay humble. She along with the rest of the world, cannot go a second without my services. I dominate this generation and plan to dominate the ones after it. A day as me is so easy. I simply do was I was made to do and everyone is happy.
I control everyone around me. They are dependent on me in every way and their eyes are glued to me at all times. They find it easier to email or texts than to speak with their friends face to face. I worry, but then again, what do I care. Life is easy for me.

Brave Little Toasters - Caleb Combs

I am a car.  Everyday I sit in front of a nice house.  Rain or shine, snow or sleet, I always remain in this driveway until Caleb wakes up in the mornings.  I can then finally rev up my engine and get warmed up for the day.  I warm up as Caleb prepares for school.  We then depart, driving at a ridiculously high speed of 35 miles per hour.....that's right, we live dangerously.  After this exhilarating experience, Caleb departs for school, and I wait patiently for his return.  By the time he has returned I am ecstatic for another daring drive home.  If I'm lucky, we will sometimes even break 40 MPH!!! I live for those days.... We then proceed to our next destination, soccer practice.  These are interesting, as I can watch the practices from where Caleb conveniently parks me.  Finally we make our way home, where me and the nice house are reunited.  What a life....I could not be more happy.

Brave little stereo - Julia Wilson

I am a stereo. I have 2 large speakers, an aux plug, and a 3 Disk CD player. I have a terrible life. Mostly because I have a really bad headache all the time. This shrew, Julia, plays music through me CONSTANTLY. And really loudly too. It's not even good music either. The Tarzan Soundtrack, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" by Whitney Houston, ***Flawless Remix, Bohemian Rhapsody. Trash. I mean, she doesn't think it's trash, but it's so not up my alley. I like Bob Marley. Mellow. Something that doesn't vibrate. Often times I'll unplug the aux cord when she's not looking so the music will stop. I also like to talk to my friend, the router, and tell him to stop working. He has my back almost every day. No internet means no Spotify and I can actually chill out for a few minutes. I can't wait till she moves out I hate her.

Assignment 13: Changes!

Think of all of the things and ideas that exist in the world.
Which one bothers you the most?
Think on Jonathan Swift's "Proposal" and write your own satiric solution to your troublesome issue.
First I would spend some time watching and or reading a great deal of satire to get into in the mental mode satire requires.

Brave Little Toasters- Caroline Totty

I am Baby Lips. I have the ability to make millions of lips the perfect mix of smooth and glossy. That's why so many people love me, I am the perfect mix of chap stick and lip gloss. I sit on the shelf in a store until someone buys me for $6 and then I am theirs. I usually sit in a girls purse or pocket until they use me. I am usually completely gone in a couple of weeks. It is sometimes a scary event when they apply me because a part of me goes missing onto their lips but it is also satisfying knowing I am making girls all over have softer lips. The scariest part is when someone drops me. The scary fall down onto the ground is terrifying and the dirt that gets on me afterwards is disgusting. I come in several different flavors and tints so if you wanna add a little color to your lips I am the perfect mix of lip gloss and lip stick. My life is pretty boring, but I definitely play a huge role in several teenage girls' lives.

Brave Little Toasters - Emily Cashman

I am a pillow. Without me a certain teenage girl would be in a very grumpy mood all the time. So it’s safe to say everyone owes me a big thank you for that. Nighttime is my time to shine. Every night a teenage girl climbs in to bed and it’s all because of me that she gets a good night’s sleep and is able to make it through another long day at school. The best part is each morning when her alarm clock goes off, but she continues to lie on me for 15 more minutes because she’s just not quite ready to leave me. That’s when I really feel the love. Those rare occasions when I get used during the day are so special. I know we both wish those daytime encounters could happen more often. But sadly, no matter how much I wish, they cannot. I am pillow and I am a good pillow.
