Personally i don't watch a lot of of television. When i do its just the news or a football game with my family. I still think its a good source of entertainment. When you're watching television you can just sit back and relax and you don't have to do anything. Television can also bring people together. If you look shows like the walking dead and game of thrones get millions of views. These people are brought together by their love of the show.
I do think the amount of ads on television is crazy. For every 10 minutes of a show you get 5 minutes of ads. Though most of the ads are annoying, some can be hilarious like the ads during the super bowl. But those companies pay huge amounts of money for about 30 seconds of time so they have to make the ad memorable.
I can't really say television is a good use of time because you could always be doing something better like curing cancer or fighting poverty. But it's your life so you should be able to spend it how you want.
