Do you know your neighbor? - Isabel Jenkins

Anne Russell and I go way back. Well, to sixth grade homeroom/pre-algebra with Mr. Jenkins.* We were seated at separate tables based on last name, therefore, I only got a few glimpses at Anne's face. So few, in fact, that for the first month of school I got her and Samantha McGehee confused. ("Did you get a new lunch box? No? I could've sworn it was pink with brown polka dots yesterday..." To this day, I still can't figure out why. They don't even look alike.)

But then came 7th grade Spanish. Of course the one day I was absent we picked our seats, and Anne and I got the short end of the stick and ended up sitting a row below all our other friends. But this short stick became a major turning point in our relationship, full of doodling on each other's papers and much yelling from our SeƱora (Isa! Anne! Silencio!).

Although we had plenty of other middle school memories, we didn't do much of anything together outside of class. Nothing, really, until World History last year. Anne and I became "study buddies" as suggested by Mr. Wise, and this has continued through US History. I'm not sure how it works, considering we are both non-history buffs who spend most of our study time making a lovely racket with her guitar and my violin, but we've somehow managed to finish with A's.

We like to bond over our lack of history knowledge, random talent at badminton, and mutual frustration with the American education system and other aspects of life. But this has been a lot of "we" - let's talk about Anne Russell as a single person. If you know anything at all about Anne, it's probably that she's FREAKISHLY SMART. Like, never ever gotten a B ever. She's a math and science whiz, and even though she says English is one of her worst subjects she has to be lying.

Not to mention she's an insanely talented singer and pianist who can just pick up playing random instruments like the ukelele. (Well, maybe not the violin. Sorry Anne, you're not alone.) She's friendly and welcoming and funny, too... we are all jealous from afar. Or, in my case, from my seat right next to you in English class. :)

*By the way... NOT my dad, even though half of that pre-algebra class asked me at some point.
