Yes there is most definitely appropriate time for war. No offense against the Mennonites, I am Christian as well, but the bible specifically says that God is a mighty warrior (Jeremiah 20:11, Zephaniah 3:17). He never shies away from the right fight. Just read the book of Joshua and you will quickly find that our God is not a pacifist.
As for these current issues like the ones mentioned in the prompt, I don’t always know whether war is the right response or not. It’s pretty clear when the leader of a nation asks and listens to the Lord whether to go to war or not, but our presidents don’t tend to lead that way currently. With some of these current issues, I believe the right decision is incredibly obvious. For example, the ISIS beheadings of Americans. I believe that is an example of something we need to fight against.
So basically it depends. Pointless war is of course stupid. But God is not against the right kind of battle, and there are certain things and situations that require us to fight.
